Stephen grew up in Edinburgh and Fife, so there was an element of ‘coming home’ involved in the search for a new location and a new life. It was the West Coast and the Highlands which had the greatest allure, which is why the bulk of the journey was around those places. The book describes one or two unplanned ‘off piste’ diversions, but is that not the essence of adventure?
