Book Description
This study argues that the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan and the vindication of the saints in Revelation 20:1-6 are cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in Revelation 19:11-21. The major implication of this analysis views both these events as consequent effects of Christ's victory at the eschatological battle. Applying systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis of cohesion, this study advances critical scholarship on the Book of Revelation by offering the first fully sustained answer to this frequently debated question regarding Satan's binding from a modern linguistic approach. CONTENTS AcknowledgmentsList of Figures and TablesAbbreviationsIntroduction1 Approaches to the Millennium Binding of Satan 1 Introduction 2 Historical-Temporal Interpretations 3 Non-Temporal Interpretations 4 Critical Approaches to the Book of Revelation 5 Conclusion2 A Model of Koine Greek Discourse Analysis 1 Introduction 2 Advances in Greek Linguistics 3 Discourse Analysis 4 Systemic Functional Linguistics 5 Textual Meanings 6 Conclusion3 Cohesive Harmony: Cohesive Ties and Chains 1 Introduction 2 Componential Ties and Cohesive Chains in Rev 19:11-20:6 3 General Observations 4 Conclusion4 Cohesive Harmony: Chain Interactions 1 Introduction 2 Chain Interactions in Rev 19:11-20:6 3 Modified Cohesive Harmony Index 4 Conclusion5 Information Flow: Clauses, Sentences, Paragraphs, and Sections 1 Introduction 2 Clause Thematization in Rev 19:11-20:6 (Prime and Subsequent) 3 Sentence Thematization in Rev 19:11-20:6 (Theme and Rheme) 4 Semantic Boundary Markers in 19:11-20:15 5 Topicality in 19:11-20:6 (Topic and Comment) 6 Prominence and the Binding of Satan (20:1-3) 7 Conclusion6 Information Flow: Discourse of the Book of Revelation 1 Introduction 2 The Three Adversaries of God 3 Satan's Progressive Banishment 4 The Saints' Vindication 5 Conclusion7 ConclusionAppendix 1: Historical Shifts in the Millennial DebateAppendix 2: The Identity of Those Seated on Thrones in Revelation 20:4BibliographyIndex
