Book Description
A groundbreaking framework for delivering the world’s most effective therapy―personalized to each client.
If you are a therapist who treats clients with mood disorders, you know that effective treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some clients may be struggling with trauma or difficult life experiences that worsen their symptoms, while others may face relationship issues that negatively affect their mood and behavior. In addition, every client copes with stress differently. What you need is a flexible, tailored approach to treating these clients―one that focuses on their individual needs.
Cognitive behavioral precision therapy (CBPT) is a comprehensive, transdiagnostic, and personalized framework to enhance the world’s most efficient therapy. In this professional guide, you will find tools to assess your individual clients’ needs by focusing on environmental stressors―such as social contexts and life factors―as well as the maladaptive coping mechanisms that drive emotional disorders. Most importantly, you will learn to create personalized treatment plans for optimal symptom relief.
Discover targeted interventions to help your clients:
- Learn problem-solving skills to manage emotions
- Develop healthy coping strategies
- Overcome avoidance or safety-seeking behaviors

Editorial Reviews
Review
―Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP, codirector of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, faculty at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and author of The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workbook
“
Cognitive Behavioral Precision Therapy is a game changer for anyone treating mood and anxiety disorders. By identifying each client’s unique coping patterns, it offers a refreshing, individualized approach that makes therapy more targeted and effective. The authors translate complex research into clear, usable steps, giving clinicians a powerful tool kit―and clients real hope for lasting change.”―Thomas R. Lynch, PhD, FBPsS, professor emeritus at the University of Southampton, and developer of radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT)
“By combining idiographic assessment with a limited number of transdiagnostic treatment targets,
Cognitive Behavioral Precision Therapy provides a practical framework for identifying which mechanisms drive distress for each individual patient. The authors offer clinicians a systematic, evidence-based way to personalize care, building on the clinical wisdom practitioners already bring to treatment.”―Shannon Sauer-Zavala, PhD, treatment-personalization researcher at the University of Kentucky; and author of a forthcoming personalized intervention for borderline personality disorder (BPD), The BPD Compass Workbook
“This book offers a clear and practical guide to enhancing CBT by addressing the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms that underlie many emotional difficulties―including stress, emotion-driven behaviors and avoidance, and cognitive misappraisals. The intervention strategies are evidence-based, clearly explained, and easy to implement, and the volume is enriched with excellent client-focused handouts and worksheets. This is an outstanding resource that clinicians will return to again and again.”
“Elegant in its simplicity yet masterful in its precision, McKay and colleagues provide a detailed road map that illuminates a path from symptoms to solutions in clear, doable steps.
Cognitive Behavioral Precision Therapy identifies core processes underpinning psychological problems, points clinicians to targeted interventions that help clients get ‘unstuck’ from the ineffective coping patterns driving their ongoing struggles, and offers hope for improved emotional resilience.”―Rochelle I. Frank, PhD, assistant clinical professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley; and coauthor of The Transdiagnostic Road Map to Case Formulation and Treatment Planning
“
Cognitive Behavioral Precision Therapy is an indispensable tool for the busy clinician. This highly accessible resource provides the necessary framework to evaluate clients, precisely identify key maladaptive processes, and implement state-of-the-art techniques and interventions. Our clinical practice will certainly be integrating this guide.”―Bob Leahy, PhD, director of Cognitive Therapy NYC, and clinical assistant professor of psychology in psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College
